Born from Porsche’s relentless pursuit of endurance racing dominance, this 1986 Porsche 962 IMSA GTP chassis HR3 represents a pivotal chapter in prototype competition history. Built by FABCAR and delivered new to Hotchkis Racing at Watkins Glen in July 1986, HR3 made its debut under Wynn’s sponsorship and was tested by Al Holbert before being raced by Jim Adams and John Hotchkis Sr. Following a period repair and rebuild, the car returned to competition at the 1990 24 Hours of Daytona and went on to achieve a remarkable third place finish there in 1991. After retiring from frontline duty, it reemerged as a formidable historic racer, capturing the GTP class win at the 2009 Monterey Historics and later proving itself the fastest 962 at Porsche Rennsport IV in 2011. Currently powered by a Porsche Motorsport North America built 3.2-liter single-turbo flat-six estimated at over 750 horsepower, this 962 benefits from modern GT1-derived internals, including a forged crankshaft and strengthened lower end, paired with Bosch Motronic management, Garrett turbocharging, and air-to-air intercooling. Power is delivered through a Porsche five-speed transaxle with Metalore axles, while Brembo brakes and Penske Racing shocks handle stopping and suspension duties. Supplied with its original HR3 tub, this example stands among the best-prepared 962s in existence, fully race-ready and actively maintained for competition.
